NYC Marathon 2023 Winners

Tamirat Tola and Hellen Obiri wins nyc marathon 2023

Tamirat Tola

This marathon season also seems to be record breaking season. After the Kenyans dominated the last few marathons around the globe, it was Ethiopian runner who broke a long standing record at NYC Marathon on 5th November 2023.

Tamirat Tola from Ethiopia broke the course record with a timing of 2 hours 4 minutes and 58 seconds. The 12 year record which was broken by Tamirat, was held by Kenyan Geoffrey Mutai (2 hours 5 mins 6 seconds) since 2011.  Tamirat Tola who had run the NYC marathon in 2018 and 2019 had finished fourth. He pulled away from his fellow countryman Jemal Yimer when they were nearing Bronx somewhere at mile 20. From there it was no looking back for him. There was a big difference between him and 1st runner up Albert Korir from Kenya of nearly 2 minutes. Korir incidentally was the winner of NYC marathon in 2021.

The men’s race had a clear cut winner whereas the women’s race was dramatic. The women’s pack was together till the last 400 meters when Hellen Obiri of Kenya pulled away. Obiri, Letesenbet Gidey of Ethiopia and defending champion Sharon Lokedi were fighting to keep up the lead before Obiri decided that she had to pull away from the pack. Obiri looked exhausted in the last mile but her grit and determination helped her pullaway in the last 400 mieter. Obiri finished the race in 2 hours 27 minutes and 23 seconds into the iconic central park in Newyork city. Lokedi who won the Boston Marathon earlier this year was just 10 seconds behind Obiri. It was expected that the 20 year old record would be broken in Women’s category as the weather was much cooler and pleasant from last year.

In the wheelchair category Catherine Debrunner of Switzerland shattered the course record with timing of 1:39:32 hrs. This was her debut at NYC marathon. She broke American Sussanah Scaroni’s record by over 3 minutes. Both Cathertine Debrunner and Tamirat Tola earned a well deserved bonus of $50,000 for breaking the course record.
